Frequently asked Questions about Pph

Question over 5 years ago

How does PPH work?

Dr. Suhas Bhargav MBBS , General Physician

PPH contains misoprostol which is a prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analogue that possesses antisecretory property that inhibits gastric acid secretion. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins which leads to diminishing bicarbonate and mucus secretion which contributes to ulceration. PPH has mucosal protective properties that protect the stomach tissues from the damage caused by the stomach acid through decreased acid secretion and mucosal protective action. It induces labour by causing relaxation of cervix uteri (which is the lower part of the uterus). In the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage PPH works by causing contractions of smooth muscle fibres of the myometrium (middle layer of the uterine wall).

Question over 4 years ago

Can PPH be taken without mifepristone?

Dr. Roshni Poonja MBBS , General Physician, Internal Medicine

Yes, PPH alone can be taken without mifepristone it has been found to give apparently good results but it is recommended to take PPH 36-48 hours after taking mifepristone. This combination helps not only preventing excessive bleeding but it also provides better results as compared to misoprostol alone.

Question almost 4 years ago

Can I take PPH with aspirin?

Question almost 5 years ago

Can PPH cause headache?

Dr. Saikat Mukherjee MBBS , General Physician

Yes, PPH can cause a headache, this occurs rarely. It is a known side effect of this drug. However, the exact cause behind this is unknown. If you experience a severe headache after taking this drug, consider taking a mild painkiller, applying balms and complete rest. Even after this if the pain does not subside then discuss with your doctor immediately.

Question almost 5 years ago

Does PPH cause bleeding?

Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo MBBS , Internal Medicine

Yes, PPH causes bleeding this occurs due to the expelling the tissues of the fetus from the uterus. But if you observe that the heavy bleeding is continuing for more than 2 hours or usage of a sanitary napkin is more than 2 pads every hour, then this situation warrants immediate hospitalization to recover from blood loss. In case of incomplete or unsuccessful abortion, you may require surgical procedures. The heavy bleeding can be due to uterine rupture. However, this is a rare situation which occurs only in very few cases.
