Hyphoral is a brand name of ketoconazole. It is a prescription drug that belongs to the class of medication called antifungal agents. It is used to treat fungal infections such as tinea corporis (fungal infection of the skin or scalp known as ringworm), tinea cruris (fungal infection in the skin of the genitals known as Jock itch), tinea pedis (fungal infection between the toes also known as athlete's foot), cutaneous candidiasis (skin and nail fungal infection), tinea versicolor (discolored patches of skin), and vaginal candidiasis (a yeast infection of the vagina). Over the counter ketoconazole shampoo control flaking, scaling, and itching of the scalp caused by dandruff.
Hyphoral contains ketoconazole which works by blocking the ergosterol synthesis leading to membrane abnormalities in the fungus which is necessary for fungal cell membrane growth. Hence in this way, it kills the fungus by destroying its cell membrane and treats the fungal infection.
Yes, Hyphoral can be used on the scalp. Prescription ketoconazole shampoo is used to treat tinea capitis (scalp) but it has poor efficacy against them while over the counter ketoconazole shampoo is used to prevent and control scaling as well as the itching caused by dandruff.
