Halkeran

Halkeran (Chlorambucil) is an alkylating agent used primarily in the treatment of certain cancers, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Chlorambucil interferes with the DNA of cancer cells, inhibiting their ability to reproduce and proliferate. Chlorambucil is an alkylating agent that works by adding an alkyl group to the DNA molecule, which leads to the formation of DNA cross-links. This process prevents DNA from being able to replicate and causes cell death. By interfering with DNA replication and transcription, it inhibits the growth and division of cancer cells. Chlorambucil is considered a "mustard gas" derivative, a type of chemotherapy that acts at the cellular level.

Uses

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL):

• Used for the treatment of CLL in both early and advanced stages, especially when the disease is not amenable to other therapies.

• Chlorambucil can be used as a single agent or in combination with other medications.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL):

• Chlorambucil is used in the treatment of NHL, particularly in cases of indolent (slow-growing) lymphoma.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma:

• Less commonly used but may be employed in specific cases, often in combination with other chemotherapy drugs.

Other Conditions:

• Off-label use in various autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and nephrotic syndrome, due to its immunosuppressive properties.

Duration of Action- Chlorambucil’s effects can persist for weeks to months, depending on the treatment regimen. Its impact on DNA synthesis can continue for a prolonged period after the drug has been cleared from the system.
