Esole works by blocking the action of an enzyme (H+/K+ATPase) in the cells (parietal) of the stomach which is responsible for acid production in the stomach. Due to blockage of this enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this helps to relieve the stomach from acidity, heartburn, GERD, stomach ulcer and other acidity related stomach problem.
Discontinuation of Esole on your own can cause rebound effects. So, it advisable to take this drug as directed by the doctor and do not discontinue/stop medicine on your own. Please inform the doctor before stopping/discontinuing this drug on your own.
This is because a long-term use of Esole can cause Vitamin B12 deficiency. Stomach acids help in the absorption of Vitamin B 12, and this drug suppresses stomach acid which is required for the absorption of vitamin B12. Hence patients taking [medicine] for a long time have Vitamin B12 deficiency. To replenish Vitamin B12 in your body your doctor prescribes this vitamin along with this medicine.
Take Esole as long as needed, but do not take more than 4 weeks. If your symptoms still persist even after 4 weeks then consult your doctor before taking this drug afterward.
