Alkapil is a brand name of disodium Hydrogen Citrate and it comes in liquid dosage form (syrup). It is a prescription drug that belongs to the class of drugs known as alkalinizing agents. It is used for the treatment of gout (a type of arthritis that occurs due to the formation and deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints). It is also used for the prevention of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) and treatment of acidosis (decrease in blood pH levels). Sometimes it is used along with antibiotics to treat urinary tract infections.
Alkapil contains disodium Hydrogen Citrate (an alkalinizing agent) which is metabolized into bicarbonate. Bicarbonate causes an increase in pH of urine (alkalinizes urine) by promoting the excretion of free bicarbonate ions, this leads to increase in solubility of cysteine which is present in the urine and this results in ionization of uric acid into more soluble urate ion. In this way Alkapil works and helps the body to get rid of excessive uric acid.
Take Alkapil as advised by your doctor. Do not discontinue the drug suddenly or take it longer than prescribed by your doctor.
