Amfosted Injection is a cytoprotective agent used primarily to reduce the harmful side effects of certain cancer treatments. It protects healthy tissues from the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation while allowing these treatments to target cancer cells effectively. Amifostine Injection is indicated for:
Protection During Chemotherapy : Used to prevent kidney damage (nephrotoxicity) in patients undergoing cisplatin-based chemotherapy for advanced cancers.
Protection During Radiation Therapy : Reduces dry mouth (xerostomia) in patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancers.
Amifostine is a prodrug that is converted into its active form by the enzyme alkaline phosphatase, which is more abundant in healthy cells than in tumor cells. This selective activation allows the drug to protect normal tissues from damage caused by free radicals generated during chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
